ACT Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Older Persons’ Housing

Mura Gunya Opening!

An exciting new older person housing project is being built at Jenke Circuit in Kambah for older members of the ACT Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. This is a first for the ACT.

Housing and Community Services is working closely with the ACT Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elected Body to build five, two-bedroom units.

The units will be located in a cluster around a communal landscape area. The project makes generous use of the site responding to the importance of the collective and maintaining family relationships in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community. At the same time each resident is made to feel safe and secure.

Each unit design has a strong link between the home’s exterior and interior spaces. The large covered veranda-like space allows residents to extend the interior living space, catering for larger family gatherings. Separate private courtyards have been provided to give residents an opportunity for privacy.

Each unit will have a minimum 6 star energy rating, energy efficient equipment and fittings and will be designed to adaptable standards which will support the tenants and allow them to ‘age in place’.
