Term 4, ACT Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elected Body

Dear Community members

Following on from my last e-message I wanted to bring you up to speed with some recent developments.

Last Friday morning Member Fred Monaghan and I met with Justine Saunders, Chief Police Officer, to discuss the recent Canberra Times articles regarding racial profiling and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples arrest rates.

Both Fred and I felt that the meeting went well and the Chief Police Officer agreed to meeting with key individuals, stakeholders and our broader community to discuss the issues. I would expect that the Chief Police Officer will start making these arrangements and hosting a community forum this week.

Further, please be advised that Mr Ross Fowler submitted his resignation last Friday and I have started the process of filling the casual vacancy with the assistance of the ACT Electoral Commission.  The ACT Electoral Commission will be writing to those candidates from the 2017 elections over the next week and it is hopeful to ascertain if they are still interested in holding a position on the Body, and that we will have a successful outcome and a new member by the end of November 2017 at the latest.

I will keep you informed as this process progresses.

I would like to hear your feedback by forwarding an email to atsieb@act.gov.au or calling the Secretariat on 02 6205 2551.
