Board of Inquiry into Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Deaths in Custody at the AMC
The ACT Government has committed to establishing a Board of Inquiry into the tragic deaths of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in custody at the Alexander Maconochie Centre.
This follows years of advocacy from families, Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations and community leaders calling for accountability, transparency, and systemic reform.
The inquiry will examine systemic issues within the AMC:
- Cultural safety and mental health support
- Use of force and incident handling
- Rehabilitation, education, and cultural programs
- Oversight structures and advocacy pathways
ATSIEB welcomes this important step and will continue to advocate for the safety, dignity, and rights of our people in custody. We stand with the families who have lost loved ones and the community members who have fought tirelessly for justice.
Expressions of interest will soon open for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community members to join an advisory committee to help shape the inquiry.
