Expressions of interest open for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community Advisory Committee

The ACT Government is establishing a Board of Inquiry under the Inquiries Act 1991 to examine systemic issues in relation to the deaths of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the Alexander Maconochie Centre.

Members of the ACT Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community can express interest in taking part in a Community Advisory Committee to assist in establishing the Board of Inquiry.

The expression of interest process is open until 14 November 2025.

Community Advisory Committee role and committments

The role of the Community Advisory Committee will be to advise the ACT Government on:

  • developing Terms of Reference for the Board of Inquiry, which will guide the inquiry by defining its scope and objectives
  • the skills, experience, qualities and background that are desirable in potential members of the Board of Inquiry.

The Advisory Committee will be a temporary advisory body and is expected to meet on approximately 3 occasions before establishing the Board of Inquiry. Meetings are likely to take 1 to 2 hours each.

Advisory Committee members will be remunerated at the rate of $90 per hour (or part hour).

Who should express interest in joining the Community Advisory Committee

The committee will have 6 to 8 members of the ACT Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community who:

  • have experience of, or an interest in, the justice system and how it impacts on members of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community, particularly those in custody
  • want to help the ACT Government shape the Board of Inquiry to achieve the best outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander detainees
