Justice Louise Taylor appointed first Aboriginal woman appointed Chief Magistrate of the ACT Magistrates Court

The ATSIEB warmly congratulates Justice Louise Taylor on her appointment as Chief Magistrate of the ACT Magistrates Court, starting in May 2026. Justice Taylor is the first Aboriginal woman to be appointed to this esteemed position.

A proud Kamilaroi woman, Justice Taylor has already made history as the first Aboriginal woman appointed to a superior court in Australia. This next step reflects her deep experience and excellence, and highlights the strength of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leadership within our justice system.

As the first Aboriginal woman in this role, Justice Taylor is helping to create a path for others to follow. This appointment sends a message to young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people that these roles are not out of reach. Through Aboriginal leaders like Justice Taylor breaking barriers in the justice system, young people can now see themselves in courtrooms, on the bench, and in positions of leadership. Moments like this help build confidence, open doors, and reinforce that culture and identity are strengths in any setting.

We wish Justice Taylor every success in her appointment.
