New members appointed to the ACT’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elected Body
Released 14/02/2017
Cabinet today confirmed the appointment of Mr Dion Devow and Ms Selina Walker to fill the two current vacancies on the ATSIEB.
Mr Devow and Ms Walker are proud and hard-working members of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community, and they will bring a wealth of energy and insight to ATSIEB.
Mr Devow, a Canberra-based entrepreneur, was born and raised in Darwin and is of both Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander descent. In 2011, he launched Darkies Design, a clothing label strongly influenced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art, languages, themes, and humour.
He has a Bachelor of Applied Science in Health Education and has supported Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people’s access to health, justice, and education for more than 20 years.
Ms Walker, the granddaughter of Ngunnawal Elder Aunty Agnes Shea, is a leader of the Ngunnawal people and is well known for her work supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth.
Over nearly a decade, Ms Walker has worked in various roles at Gugan Gulwan Youth Aboriginal Corporation. In 2015 she represented local Traditional Owners at a meeting with the Prince of Wales.
ATSIEB works with the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community to bring issues of concern to the Minister and the ACT Government more broadly.
The next ATSIEB elections will be held in July 2017 and I encourage all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Canberrans to participate.
I look forward to working with Mr Devow and Ms Walker though the ATSIEB to improve the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples across the ACT.
