Focusing on the needs of our ACT Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community

ATSIEB Communique

25 October 2023 Meeting

The Elected Body met on Wednesday 25 October 2023 to have our first meeting since the Referendum.

We are proud that our Territory recognised the importance of constitutional recognition and a voice for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Our heart goes to our wider Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community across Australia. We are with you and will work hard to show the value of our voice in the ACT and share our learnings with other jurisdictions.

We had a dynamic and interesting meeting that has refocused our energies on the needs of our ACT Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.

ACT Community Services Directorate, ACCO Development team leader Chris Simpson came to discuss the emerging draft for the new ACCO policy. We are hopeful that this will support the growth and development for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community Controlled Organisations.

TCCS came to discuss the future governance arrangements for Boomanulla to commence the journey to return Boomanulla to community control.

We heard from ACT Health on the work they are leading and championing in ACT Government on Indigenous Data Sovereignty. It was an interesting discussion and has challenged us all to learn more and become more understanding of the data that we are given and how we interpret it.

We are committed to working for our community, advocating for change and holding the ACT Government to account for their actions against the ACT Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Agreement.

We encourage the community to attend the NAIDOC Community Day on Saturday 28 October at Boomanulla. Come down and enjoy a great day with our community.
